“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to Change the World.” Nelson Mandela
On July 20, 2017, the institution was formally renamed Nelson Mandela University, making it the world’s only university to bear the name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. It is our rare joy to pay homage to Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s most respected politician and a man who became the world’s moral compass, with the full backing of Mandela’s eldest grandson and custodian of the family, Mandla Mandela. Mandela thought that education was a positive force and urged all South Africans to value knowledge and never stop learning. He appreciated variety, particularly the bringing together of diverse brains, backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives to accomplish greatness. He also stated that his contribution was only the beginning, and he invited students, professors, and others to join him. Universities may establish new routes and usher in new cycles of economic innovation, political transformation, and equality. We accept Mandela’s challenge and commemorate his memory by guiding our university through a period of radical innovation, progress, and change. We are taking responsibility for his legacy as an innovative 21st-century institution of higher learning, ensuring that it is reflected in the way we teach, study, research, and connect with our communities.
people live and work as students, employees, alumni, and partners. Nelson Mandela committed his life to better society and transforming the globe, and as the university that bears his name, we are convinced that we can live up to his legacy.
