NBT Results 2025-2026: Patterns and Predictions:

The National Benchmark Test Project is a standardized testing program in South Africa that assesses the academic readiness of students who are considering university. The tests evaluate important skills needed for success in higher education, like critical thinking, problem-solving, and academic literacy.

These tests are usually given to high school graduates or people applying to universities in South Africa. The results from the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) help universities make admissions decisions by providing additional insights into an applicant’s academic capabilities, beyond just their high school grades.

The NBTs are not meant to replace high school qualifications. Instead, they add to them, giving universities a fuller picture of a student’s readiness for college-level studies. The tests are split into two main sections: the Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test, and the Mathematics test.

Overall, the National Benchmark Test Project aims to make university admissions in South Africa fairer and more transparent by providing a consistent way to gauge the academic preparedness of all applicants.

NBT Test Sections

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) assess your academic readiness for university. Each test requires you to use your existing knowledge and skills to engage with materials that reflect what is expected from first-year university students. Here’s a quick overview of the skills evaluated in each test:

ACADEMIC LITERACY:

  • Make meaning from the academic text;
  • Understand vocabulary related to academic study;
  • Evaluate evidence used to support claims made by writers;
  • Extrapolate and draw inferences and conclusions from the text;
  • Differentiate the main idea from supporting ideas in the overall and specific organisation of a passage;
  • Identify text differences as related to the writers’ purposes, audiences, and forms of communication;
  • Understand how syntax and punctuation are used to express meaning; and
  • Understand basic numerical concepts used in the text.

QUANTITATIVE LITERACY:

  • Apply quantitative procedures and reasoning in symbolic and non-symbolic situations;
  • Apply information from a variety of tables, graphs, charts and text;
  • Integrate information obtained from multiple sources;
  • Perform multiple-step calculations using information presented with text, symbols, and graphs;
  • Identify trends and patterns in various situations;
  • Apply properties of simple geometric shapes to determine measurements; and
  • Interpret quantitative information presented verbally, symbolically, and graphically.

MATHEMATICS:

  • Understand and apply properties of the real number system, including surds and exponents;
  • Recognise and use patterns, including sequences and series;
  • Apply relationships such as ratios and percentages in a variety of contexts;
  • Apply the results of algebraic manipulations with equations and inequalities;
  • Understand the function concept and identify properties of functions
  • Interpret transformations of functions represented algebraically or graphically;
  • Identify relationships between graphs and their equations, or inequalities and the regions they describe;
  • Apply trigonometric identities and concepts in solving problems;
  • Understand properties and interpret representations of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes;
  • Apply principles of analytic geometry;

How long are NBT Results Valid

  • Your NBT results are valid for three years. However, you should enquire with the tertiary institutions/universities to which you have applied regarding their unique admission requirements.

How Do I Get My NBT Results

  • You must access your results by logging onto the NBT website using your ID number as your username and the password you created when you registered, or by sending a request to nbt@uct.ac.za four weeks after the test session. Your results are made available by noon on the date listed on the NBT Test Schedule for 2024-2025.

If there is an outstanding balance on your account – ie – if you missed an earlier test and did not pay for it – your results will not be accessible to you. If you have difficulties accessing your results, you must send an e-mail to request your results. NBT Project staff are not allowed to release your results over the phone.

How Do Institutions Get My NBT Results for 2025-2026

  • When you apply to a school, you will be added to their applicant list. Institutions and bursary awarders send the NBT Project a request for scores that match the applicants on the list as they process applications. Institutions and bursary recipients will only receive your findings if they specifically request them.

Before submitting your registration request to the NBT Project, you must select a box indicating that you agree to have your results sent to requesting universities and used in research initiatives. Before clicking ‘Submit,’ make sure you’ve read and double-checked everything.

  • Can I Write Twice To Try For A Better Score

    The NBT Project allows an individual to write the tests two times. Note that you must pay the total fee both times. If you write the MAT test a second time, you must also write the AQL test a second time that morning. You must first check with the institutions where you are applying; not all will accept a second score.

How Are the NBT Results 2024-2025 Reported

  • The results of the NBTs are reported as three percentage scores: AL, QL and MAT which reflect actual performance, not ranking. Results are categorized by ‘Benchmark Level’ for use by institutions as shown in the table below.

What Is the Pass Mark

There is no pass mark for the NBTs. Rather, each institution and programme uses the Benchmark Levels, along with other available information, when processing applications and determining placement.

  • Some programmes and some institutions will accept a wider range of scores, while others have set a higher target and a more narrow range.
  • If you have any questions about how your result is used by an institution to which you have applied, you must contact the relevant Admissions Office.

The NBT Project does not determine nor create policy on the use of results.

The National Benchmark Test (NBT) results for 2025-2026 provide a comprehensive overview of educational performance during this period. The data reveals trends in academic achievement, showcasing the strengths and challenges within the educational system.

These results indicate areas for improvement, highlighting disparities in performance among different regions or demographics. The insights gathered from this analysis can guide educational policymakers and stakeholders in making informed decisions to enhance learning outcomes and address educational gaps. Visit the official Website of NBTs for more details.
