Nelson Mandela University is a vibrant and forward-thinking institution committed to offering high-quality education, research, and community involvement in South Africa and throughout the world. Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formerly known as the University of Port Elizabeth, Port Elizabeth Technikon, and Vista University, is a South African public university based in Port Elizabeth. In 2005, the institution was renamed in honor of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

South Campus, North Campus, Second Avenue Campus and Missionvale Campus are the university’s four campuses. The South Campus is the largest and serves as the university’s administrative center. The School of Commerce and Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Law are housed on the North Campus, which is located in the Summerstrand district. The Second Avenue Campus, located in the city center, is home to the faculties of education and humanities. The Missionvale Campus is located in one of Port Elizabeth’s poorest neighborhoods and is committed to community engagement and service learning.

NMU has a variety of research centers and institutes, including the Centre for the Promotion of Quasi and Democracy, the Centre for Energy Research, the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research, and the Centre for Community Technologies. The institution also belongs to the Association of African Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Association of Southern African Regional Universities.
