Nelson Mandela University: Pioneering Change and Excellence:
Nelson Mandela University, formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), and before that, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), Port Elizabeth Technikon, and Vista University’s Port Elizabeth campus, is a prominent South African university. Its main administration is located in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth. Nelson Mandela University was established in January 2005 through the merger of these three institutions, but its roots go back to 1882 with the founding of the Port Elizabeth Art School.
As a comprehensive university, Nelson Mandela University offers both professional and vocational training across seven campuses, six in Port Elizabeth and one in George. The South Campus serves as the main campus. Students can pursue a range of qualifications from diplomas to doctoral degrees, with many courses incorporating workplace experience as part of the curriculum. English is the primary medium of instruction at the university.
On July 20, 2017, the institution was officially renamed Nelson Mandela University, becoming the only university in the world to carry the name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. This renaming, supported by Mandela’s eldest grandson and family custodian, Mandla Mandela, honours South Africa’s most beloved statesman and a global moral compass.
Mandela believed in education as a force for good, urging all South Africans to value knowledge and continue learning. He celebrated diversity, emphasizing the importance of bringing together different minds, backgrounds, talents, and approaches to achieve greatness. Mandela also viewed his contributions as a starting point, encouraging students, academics, and universities to innovate, drive democratic change, and promote equality.
