UFS Application and Registration 2024-2025

The UFS Application and registration 2024-2025 portals are opened at different periods. UFS Application is open for applications from New and continuing students from April until August 2023. Students are entreated to have in their possession supporting documents to be able to apply for admission. Prospective applicants must download the online application form via the official website of the college, fill it out with the required information and submit it along with uploaded supportive documents for review.

Selected applicants are to register using their student ID and passwords on the registration portal. The registration period begins a few weeks after application. However, prospective students’ registration takes place in January. Until selected applicants Register, they are not considered students of UFS.UFS Application and Registration are two different things during application for admission. Important information:

A non-refundable annual administrative fee is charged on all international student accounts.
The closing date for international students’ applications for undergraduate studies is 31 August 2024.
You must have a VALID study visa before you can enter South Africa.
Make sure your study visa is issued for study purposes at the UFS, and not at any other institution in South Africa. You must have a valid and appropriate/correct visa to be registered at the UFS.
You must be a member of a medical aid registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act 1998 of South Africa, as required by the South African Immigration Act. It is important that your medical aid cover MUST be valid for the duration of your studies at the UFS. No travel insurance, hospital plans or foreign medical aid will be accepted. First payment is required before you can register as a UFS student. The Department of Student Finance will communicate the amount and payment deadline to you. For more information, visit tuition fees
If you have a scholarship, inform your sponsor of the UFS regulations on registration fees and tuition fee payments before you register.

UFS Application Requirements

Certified copies of relevant academic results/transcripts/information in English.
Two passport photos of yourself.
Proof of deposit of the non-refundable application fee (refer to the application form for the amount).
Certified copy of passport.
SAQA/USAf verification document.

2024/2025 UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATIONS

Each prospective student must complete the online application.
Once your online application has been submitted and processed, you will receive a student number (Reference number).
Receiving a student number (Reference number) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of the Free State yet.
In the case of applicants re-writing Grade 12 subjects, applications will be processed on the current results available. If Grade 12 has been written more than once then your combined results must be submitted with your application.
Applicants writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) through IEB or SACAI examining bodies can apply online by selecting “National Senior Certificate” under the Results Detail page of the online application process.
Applicants currently in Grade 12 are requested to provide school-stamped copies of the final Grade 11.
Applicants transferring from another university/tertiary institution are required to declare their previous studies when applying as well as upload an official full academic record/transcript and degree/diploma certificate (where applicable).
The University of the Free State does not accept the General Education Development (GED) test for entry into any of its curricular undergraduate qualifications. The GED is no longer recognised by Universities in South Africa (USAF), and is not equivalent to a South African grade 12 (NSC/IEB/SACAI). Applicants who completed the GED and would like to study towards an undergraduate curricular qualification are advised to register and complete a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or the international equivalent thereof.
Applicants who did not complete SC/NSC/IEB must have USAF accreditation from the examination board for South African Universities. Click HERE to apply online for conditional exemption, foreign conditional exemption or mature age conditional exemption or send an email to applications@usaf.ac.za.

POSTGRADUATE APPLICATIONS

It is important to note that ALL Postgraduate programs are selection programs. Click HERE to consult the 2024 Postgraduate Prospectus.
In some instances, Honours, Master, and Doctoral students are expected to apply directly to the department or to pre-register. Please refer to the specific Faculty and departmental information to determine whether you need to apply directly or to pre-register. Visit the Faculty and specific department web page for more information.
Each prospective student must complete the online application.
Once your online application has been submitted and processed, you will receive a student number (Reference number).
Receiving a student number (Reference number) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of the Free State yet.
Admission is a separate process when your application will be evaluated by the relevant faculty.
Before you submit your online application and upload/email documents, please visit the relevant faculty/department website to confirm additional documentation that may be required e.g. departmental application form, CV, motivation, reports, dissertation/thesis proposal, etc. Visit the Faculty and specific department web page for more information.
Applicants transferring from another university/tertiary institution are required to upload an official full academic record/transcript, degree/diploma certificate, and SAQA certificate if they hold a foreign/ international qualification.
Advanced Diploma qualifications are classified as an undergraduate. It is however processed (administratively) as a postgraduate qualification due to previous studies involved.

UFS Checklist for registration

Students must be in possession of a valid study visa issued for the UFS. A study visa issued for a different university is not acceptable. No international student will be allowed to register without a valid study visa issued for the UFS.

To cancel the block on your student account, please bring the following documents with you on the day that you will be registering

Passport
Study visa
Confirmation letter for the FULL year from the medical aid registered in South Africa (no travel insurance, hospital plans, or policies will be accepted)

Original documentation as submitted with your application
SAQA/USAf verification document (SAQA – POSTGRADUATE, USAf – UNDERGRADUATE)
