UFS 2025-2026: Admission and Registration Guide:
The University of the Free State (UFS) fosters opportunities and personal growth through innovative education, dedicated research, and meaningful community engagement. Located in the heart of South Africa, they are known for their commitment to inclusivity and compassion, providing a university experience like no other.
The UFS application and registration 2025-2026 portals are opened at different periods. UFS Application is open for applications for new and continuing students from April 1 until August 2024. Students are entreated to have in their possession supporting documents to be able to apply for admission. Prospective applicants must download the online application form via the official website of the college, fill it out with the required information and submit it along with uploaded supportive documents for review.
Your eligibility for admission will be evaluated once UFS receive your certified academic transcripts (translated into English), a completed UFS application form, and a certified copy of your passport. You can now submit your application online.
Selected applicants are to register using their student ID and passwords on the registration portal. The registration period begins a few weeks after application. However, prospective students’ registration takes place in January. Until selected applicants Register, they are not considered students of UFS.UFS Application and Registration are two different things during application for admission. Below is the online application date and registration date for UFS for the academic year 2025-2026:
UFS Application Date 2025:
- The 2025 applications for UFS will open on 1 April 2024.
UFS Registration Date 2025:
- Students must report for first-semester registration in January, and for the second semester, they need to register at the beginning of July.
- Note that international students are not allowed provisional registration. You can find class schedules and venue information on our website: www.ufs.ac.za

UFS Application Requirements 2025:
New applicants applying for admission to UFS 2025 are to have the following requirements:
- The completed and signed application form.
- Certified copies of relevant academic results/transcripts/information in English.
- Two passport photos of yourself.
- Proof of deposit of the non-refundable application fee (refer to the application form for the amount).
- Certified copy of passport.
- SAQA/USAf verification document.
Note: Please be aware that surface mail or airmail from your country to South Africa may take longer than two to three weeks. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application arrives at the university before the closing date. If you fail to complete the application form correctly, do not send proof of payment for the non-refundable application fee, or omit required documents like photographs or academic results, your application processing will be delayed
UFS Registration Requirements 2025:
Registrants registering for admission to UFS 2025 are to have the following requirements:
Students must have a valid study visa issued for the UFS. A study visa issued for a different university is not acceptable. No international student will be allowed to register without a valid study visa issued for the UFS.
To cancel the block on your student account, please bring the following documents with you on the day that you will be registering:
- Passport
- Study visa
- Confirmation letter for the FULL year from the medical aid registered in South Africa (no travel insurance, hospital plans or policies will be accepted)
- Proof of payment of registration deposit (for more information on finances, please consult www.ufs.ac.za, then click on fees calendar for more detailed information.
- Original documentation as submitted with your application
- SAQA/USAf verification document (SAQA – POSTGRADUATE, USAf – UNDERGRADUATE)
UFS Application and Registration Process For 2025-2026
Follow the following step-by-step points below to apply and register for admission:
For UFS Undergraduate Applicants And Registrants:
- Please click HERE to consult the 2024 Undergraduate Prospectus to ensure you meet the minimum entrance requirements before applying.
- Each prospective student must complete the online application.
- Once your online application has been submitted and processed, you will receive a student number (Reference number).
- Receiving a student number (Reference number) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of the Free State yet.
- In the case of applicants re-writing Grade 12 subjects, applications will be processed on the current results available. If Grade 12 has been written more than once then your combined results must be submitted with your application.
- Applicants writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) through IEB or SACAI examining bodies can apply online by selecting “National Senior Certificate” under the Results Detail page of the online application process.
- Applicants currently in Grade 12 are requested to provide school-stamped copies of the final Grade 11.
- Applicants transferring from another university/tertiary institution are required to declare their previous studies when applying as well as upload an official full academic record/transcript and degree/diploma certificate (where applicable).
- The University of the Free State does not accept the General Education Development (GED) test for entry into any of its curricular undergraduate qualifications. The GED is no longer recognised by Universities in South Africa (USAF) and is not equivalent to a South African grade 12 (NSC/IEB/SACAI). Applicants who completed the GED and would like to study towards an undergraduate curricular qualification are advised to register and complete a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or the international equivalent thereof.
- Applicants who did not complete SC/NSC/IEB must have USAF accreditation from the examination board for South African Universities. Click HERE to apply online for conditional exemption, foreign conditional exemption or mature age conditional exemption or send an email to applications@usaf.ac.za.
- To apply for the University Access Programmes (UAP), please click HERE to ensure you meet the minimum admission requirements before applying.
For UFS Postgraduate Applicants And Registrants:
- It is important to note that ALL Postgraduate programs are selection programs. Click HERE to consult the 2024 Postgraduate Prospectus.
- In some instances, Honours, Master’s, and Doctoral students are expected to apply directly to the department or to pre-register. Please refer to the specific Faculty and departmental information to determine whether you need to apply directly or to pre-register. - Each prospective student must complete the online application.
- Once your online application has been submitted and processed, you will receive a student number (Reference number).
- Receiving a student number (Reference number) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of the Free State yet.
- Admission is a separate process when your application will be evaluated by the relevant faculty.
- Before you submit your online application and upload/email documents, please visit the relevant faculty/department website to confirm additional documentation that may be required e.g. departmental application form, CV, motivation, reports, dissertation/thesis proposal, etc. Visit the Faculty and specific department web page for more information.
- Applicants transferring from another university/tertiary institution are required to upload an official full academic record/transcript, degree/diploma certificate, and SAQA certificate if they hold a foreign/ international qualification.
- Advanced Diploma qualifications are classified as undergraduate. It is however processed (administratively) as a postgraduate qualification due to previous studies involved.
