University Of Cape Town Library

UCT Libraries came into being in 1905 when the printed resources accumulated by the then South African College were, for the first time, assembled into an organised collection by the incumbent professor of modern languages. The University Of Cape library is a collection of materials, books or media that are accessible for use and not just for display purposes.

UCT Libraries are a world-class repository of knowledge and innovative research. UCT’s main library, the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library, and its seven branch libraries offer a diverse array of study and research materials.

UCT Libraries is providing a virtual library service, which will be centred on:

• delivery of electronic information to users
• continued support for the full suite of research data services online
• support for the online teaching programme
• Sourcing, where possible, open-access books and e-versions of textbooks with multiple licenses to support the online teaching
• Facilitating access to additional information and knowledge resources that are being made available by publishers/vendors at this time.

Librarians will provide learning and research support by offering/providing an in-depth reference service which includes, amongst others, lists of electronic information sources, course and assignment support, virtual research landscape analysis services to masters and PhD students, reference management and literature reviews.

 

Is the UCT library open to the public?

Welcome to UCT Libraries. Members of the public are welcome to use our Libraries on a once-off basis or for a few visits.

 

Where is the UCT library?

UCT’s main library is the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library which forms a U-shape around Sarah Baartman Hall on the Upper Campus.

 

Request a book from a Branch Library

Request the book online. Specify a pick-up location for the book and the book will be transferred on your behalf. You will receive an email when the book is available for you to borrow.

How long will it take to get a book?

The person who has it out on loan will be given a maximum of 7 days to return the book. For urgent requests, visit the Loans Desk staff who will do their best to retrieve the item as quickly as possible.

 

What happens if I return my books after the due date?

• Late returns: R2.00 per day.
• Late returns on recalled books (requested by another borrower): R5.00 per day
• Fines accrue to a maximum of R50 per item.
• Fines R50.00 or more: Triggers an automated system “block” which prevents you from borrowing further items until the fine is paid.

 

Lost UCT library book?

• Go to the Loans Desk and inform the staff.
• Lost library materials must be paid for by the borrower who has lost them.
• An additional handling charge of R250 (to cover the costs of reordering, cataloguing, and processing) will be payable per item.
