On January 1, 2004, the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal combined to form the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The new university unites the two former universities’ significant histories. The university’s vision is to be the premier African scholarship university, and its mission is to be a truly South African university of choice that is academically great, research-driven, entrepreneurial, and socially involved.

The University of Durban-Westville was formed in the 1960s as the University College for Indians on Salisbury Island in Durban Bay.
During the 1960s, student numbers were low due to the Congress Alliances’ goal of avoiding apartheid structures.
This program gave way to a protest education” campaign in the 1980s, which attempted to convert apartheid institutions into battlegrounds.

The University of Natal was founded in Pietermaritzburg in 1910 as the Natal University College. The University of Natal was granted independent university status in 1949 as a result of its rapid growth in enrollment, a wide range of courses, and achievements in and opportunities for research.

Following World War I, the NUC had already extended to Durban and was now a multi-campus institution. The Howard College building was presented by Mr. T B Davis, whose son Howard Davis was killed during the Battle of the Somme in World War I.

The two universities in KwaZulu-Natal were among the first to merge in 2004, as part of the government’s higher education reform plans, which will reduce the country’s higher education institutions from 36 to 21. The mergers are the result of a multi-year consultation process on higher education reform that began in the early 1990s and was ratified by a Cabinet decision in December 2002. UKZN forms 2024
