Welcome to the University of Pretoria’s¬†Department of Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is the art and science of guiding people with activity limitations to perform the important daily activities (self-care, leisure and work tasks).  The aim is to optimise functional abilities so that people are able to participate in their communities.
Occupational Therapy is provided for people who are at risk of occupational dysfunction, for example, people with developmental delays or learning disabilities or physical and/or psycho-social dysfunctions.

Undergraduate studies
Bachelor of Occupational Therapy
The 4-year programme for the BOccTher degree follows the Pretoria Integrated Curriculum for Occupational Therapy (PICOT).
In the learning process the basic sciences, e.g. anatomy or psychology, are applied when learning occupational therapy for different conditions. A problem-based approach is used with a large emphasis on fieldwork, which starts in the first year.
 

Postgraduate Diploma

Fields of study for postgraduate diplomas offered:

Master of Occupational Therapy

The Department offers a master’s degree in occupational therapy, which can be done through coursework. Fields of study for coursework:

  • Hand Therapy
  • Neurology
  • Paediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Activity Theory

Philosophiae Doctor

The department offers a docotr’s degree in occupational therapy, which can be done through a thesis.
