University Of Pretoria Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering has a role in many facets of human life, including the production of food and energy, clean water and sanitation, shelter and healthcare, as well as other value-added goods employing chemical, biological and physico-chemical processes. Sadly, these processes’ unexpected byproducts have seriously harmed both the ecology and human life.

By closing the material cycles and producing value-added goods from the waste products of these processes using green and sustainable processes, as illustrated below, the training provided by the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria equips its graduates with the necessary skills that could be directed at eliminating or minimising the negative ecological footprints of unsustainable chemical engineering activities. The Department is equally equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support our academic and research programmes.

BEng Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering involves all aspects of the industrial processes that, in the broadest sense, convert raw materials into higher-value products by means of combinations of physical, chemical, thermal, biochemical and mechanical changes. The programme provides you with the necessary foundation to ensure that once you graduate, you will be able to make creative contributions to the world’s ever-increasing needs by:

  • converting natural resources into efficient and useable forms
  • of energy;
  • developing more durable, lighter and renewable materials;
  • designing more efficient, environmentally friendly processing
  • plants;
  • applying biotechnology to convert raw materials into products in a sustainable way;
  • designing processes to ensure that limited natural resources, such as water, can be reused; and
  • leaving a clean and sustainable environment behind for future generations.

Admission Requirements

  • The admission requirements apply to students who apply for admission to the University of Pretoria with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Independent Examination Board (IEB) qualifications.
  • School of Tomorrow (SOT), Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) and General Education Development Test (GED): The University of Pretoria no longer accepts qualifications awarded by these institutions.

  • is a registered student at another tertiary institution, or was previously registered at another tertiary institution and did not complete the programme enrolled for at that institution, and is not currently enrolled at a tertiary institution, or has completed studies at another tertiary institution, but is not currently enrolled at a tertiary institution, or has started with tertiary studies at UP, then moved to another tertiary institution and wants to be readmitted at UP.

A transferring student will be considered for admission based on

  • an NSC or equivalent qualification with exemption to bachelor’s or diploma studies (whichever is applicable); and meeting the minimum faculty-specific subject requirements at NSC or tertiary level; or having completed a higher certificate at a tertiary institution with faculty-specific subjects/modules passed (equal to or more than 50%), as well as complying with faculty rules on admission;
  • previous academic performance (must have passed all modules registered for up to the closing date of application ) or as per faculty regulation/promotion requirements;

A returning student will be considered for admission based on

  • an NSC or equivalent qualification with exemption to bachelor’s or diploma studies (whichever is applicable); and meeting the minimum faculty-specific subject requirements at NSC or tertiary level; or previous academic performance (should have a cumulative weighted average of at least 50% for the programme enrolled for);
  • having applied for and was granted leave of absence.
