Cape Peninsula University of Technology: Empowering the Next Generation:
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) was established on January 1, 2005, through the merger of Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon. This merger was part of a nationwide effort to transform South Africa’s higher education system. Consequently, CPUT’s history encompasses the legacies of these two institutions, with roots stretching back to 1920.
Following the enactment of the Technikons Act in 1976, technical colleges in South Africa were authorized to offer tertiary education in specific disciplines. In 1979, both the Cape and Peninsula Technikon were officially recognized as technikons, and by 1993, they were permitted to grant degrees, including Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Technology.
CPUT stands as the only university of technology in the Western Cape and is the largest university in the region. It consists of six faculties specializing in Applied Science, Business and Management Sciences, Education, Informatics and Design, Engineering and the Built Environment, and Health and Wellness Sciences.
The university is known for its service-learning programs, which are designed to offer students course-based, credit-bearing experiences that combine academic study with community service. Through structured activities that address community needs, students gain deeper insights into their coursework, broaden their understanding of their field, and develop a stronger sense of civic responsibility.
CPUT offers fewer than 100 career-oriented courses across its two main campuses in Bellville and Cape Town. The Granger Bay Campus, which houses the Cape Town Hotel School and a restaurant, is located near the iconic V&A Waterfront. In addition to these, CPUT has additional campuses in Mowbray and Wellington, providing a diverse range of educational opportunities.
