UKZN A Step-by-Step Guide to Online Applications:

The University of KwaZulu-Natal Online Application (UKZN) 2025-2026 applications must be done online, thus, manual applications are not accepted. The online application portal opens from April until 30 June for students pursuing Medicine and on 30 September 2024 for students pursuing other programs. The online applications must be submitted before the proposed closing date of the institution.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the best universities in South Africa. The University was established on 1 January 2004 as a result of the merger between the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal. The new university brings together the rich histories of both the former Universities. The University of KwaZulu-Natal offers undergraduate and Postgraduate programs for its prospective students.

For returning undergraduate students, students with a gap year, all local postgraduate applications and both undergraduate and postgraduate international applicants. Applicants are to remember to upload the following documents (where applicable):

  • Certified copy of your ID/passport.
  • Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate or O/A Levels or relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
  • Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA), that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities, if you are an international applicant. For more information, refer to the undergraduate prospectus.
  • An applicant who has studied at any other tertiary institution must, in addition, present certified copies of degree certificates, full academic records, proof of financial clearance and a certificate of conduct from that institution.
  • Proof of English proficiency for International applicants from non-English speaking countries.
  • South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluations if the previous qualification(s) was/were obtained at foreign universities (outside South Africa).
  • A research proposal/proposed title of the dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a master’s Degree or PhD.
  • Before applying online please make sure that you have read the guidelines above.
  • Please ensure that you have the USAF/SAQA documents to be uploaded to complete your application.
  • Please ensure to use the reference APPN (followed by your student number) when making application fee payments.
  • Please allow the system 24 hrs to 48 hrs to clear your payment.
  • South African first-time undergraduate applicants applying to UKZN must apply via CAO at www.cao.ac.za

Below is the process to follow in applying for admission to UKZN:

UKZN 2025 Application Process For Local Students:

The CAO application form allows an applicant to apply to more than one institution and allows up to six choices on the same application form:

  • Consult the CAO handbook that provides listings of qualifications available at the different institutions.
  • Have a look through the various courses offered and choose a programme that interests you and for which you may qualify. Pay attention to closing dates for qualifications.
  • Find the programme code that is linked to the qualification that you have chosen. This code needs to be entered on the application form.
  • Use this programme code when completing the CAO form, which is available from the CAO, the CAO website, the University’s Application and Information Office at Howard College, or the Student Academic Administration Offices at Edgewood, Howard College, Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses.

UKZN Application Process for International Students:

If you would like to apply for admission to a full-time undergraduate programme, you must apply on the UKZN Undergraduate application form.

A non-refundable application fee is payable to UKZN. Enclosed is proof of payment as well as all documents requested on submission of your application. Take care to ensure that your application reaches us before the closing date.

Refugee applicants must have a valid Section 41 permit/Refugee identity document which permits them to study. Application procedures and application fees for local students are applicable. Apply via the Central Applications Office.
