Walter Sisulu University is a higher education institution located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, established in 2005. With approximately 30,000 students and nearly 1,800 staff, the university operates across four campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City (East London), and Komani.
Prospective students can apply for the online application 2025 for undergraduate programs from May to the 21st of September 2024. Application opens in April each year. Applications close on 30 September 2024 for Health Sciences applicants and 31 October 2024 for international applicants. - Prospective students can apply for the online application 2025 for undergraduate programs from May to the 21st of September 2024. Application opens in April each year. - The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council.
- Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations or recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.
Diploma Programs:
- The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution and an achievement rating of 3 (40-49%) or better for 4 recognised 20-credit subjects, excluding life orientation, as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council.
- Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations or recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.
Bachelor’s Degree Programs:
- The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution and an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) or better for 4 recognised 20-credit subjects, excluding life orientation, as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council.
- Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations or recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.
Students with international school leaving results:
- Applications from students with international school leaving results are considered in terms of the “Higher Education South Africa (HESA) guideline document, ” A guide to application for exemption certificates”, and where required submission of international qualification to SAQA for benchmarking in terms of HEQC.
- These students will be assisted by WSU’s international office.
- Admission in terms of Mature Age Endorsement will be in terms of Rule 1.13 in the General Prospectus.
Transfer Students
Students who are from another tertiary institution may apply and submit the following documents:
- Matric Certificate
- Post-Matric Certificate
- Identity Document
- Official Academic Report
- Conduct Certificate.
International Applicants
- You will need to first apply to Universities in South Africa (USAF) for evaluation of school results or other degree/diploma certificates.
- When you receive the results from Usaf you may commence with the application process and upload the results and a copy of your passport.

Walter Sisulu University (Wsu) Online Application Requirements 2025/2026
Applicants are to provide the following documents during the application period:
- Proof of payment receipt of your application fee (This is a non-refundable compulsory fee for every applicant)
- A Certified copy of your ID document(ID document is compulsory for South African citizens – your application cannot be processed without a certified copy of your ID and Passport Number for International Applicants)
- Exam Results: Final Grade 12 results (if available). Grade 11 results (if you currently doing grade 12) are very important for your application. Thus, have it on hand.
- A unique email address when applying either online or in a hard copy.
NBT Test: This institution requires you to write a National Benchmark Test (NBT) before you can apply. For more information on NBT kindly click here
Walter Sisulu University (Wsu) Online Application Fee 2025/2026
- All Applicants Applying must pay a non-refundable R100.
- International applicants must pay a non-refundable fee of R100.
- Note that this fee needs to be paid before the application closing date of 30 September because a late application fee will attract a fee of R200. for both South African applicants and International applicants.
