Central University of Technology, Free State or CUT is a University of Technology in Bloemfontein in the Free State province of South Africa. It was established in 1981 as the “Technikon Free State”. As part of the South African government’s restructuring of tertiary education for the new millennium, it was promoted to the university of technology status.
The main campus is situated in Bloemfontein, the capital city of Free State province in the centre of South Africa. Other campuses have been established at Welkom in the heart of the Free State goldfields, and at Kimberley in facilities managed by the Northern Cape Higher Education Institute. CUT’s vision is to be “a leading African University of Technology, shaping the future through innovation.” The Central University of Technology employs over 800 academic and research staff and has about 21 000 students spread across four faculties.
Faculties
Central University of Technology comprises of four main Faculties, namely;
- Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology
- Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences
- Faculty of Humanities
- Faculty of Management Sciences
Student enrollment
The Central University of Technology offers contact and distance learning. In 2007, it had 10,278 contact students and 200 distance students. There were 8,474 full-time and 2,004 part-time students. Of the student body, 9,902 were South African citizens, 532 were from other SADC countries and 44 were international students from countries other than the SADC.
