The University of KwaZulu-Natal was established on January 1, 2004, when the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal merged.
The new institution combines the rich histories of the two previous universities.

On Salisbury Island in Durban Bay, the University of Durban-Westville was founded in the 1960s as the University College for Indians. Due to the Congress Alliances’ aim of avoiding apartheid structures, student numbers were low during the 1960s. In the 1980s, this program gave place to a campaign of “education under protest,” which aimed to turn apartheid institutions into battlegrounds.

The University of Natal was established in 1910 as the Natal University College in Pietermaritzburg. Due to its quick expansion in numbers, a wide choice of courses, and achievements in and possibilities for research, the University of Natal was given independent university status in 1949.
The NUC had already expanded to Durban following World War 1 and was now a multi-campus institution. Mr. T B Davis, whose son Howard Davis was killed during the Battle of the Somme in World War I, donated the Howard College building, which was dedicated in 1931.

The two KwaZulu-Natal universities were among the first group of South African schools to combine in 2004, as part of the government’s higher education reform plans, which will decrease the country’s higher education institutions from 36 to 21. The mergers represent the culmination of a wide-ranging consultative process on the reform of the Higher Education Sector that began in the early 1990s and was confirmed by a Cabinet decision in December 2002. The online application for the 2024-2025 academic season has No closing date, therefore all prospective students can apply to the university at any time.

Closing Dates For South African Citizens

• Semester 1 (January intake)
• Medicine: 31 July: No late applications are accepted.
• All other programs: 30 September.
• • Applications close on 30 April.

Semester 2: (August Intake)

• Apply directly to UKZN.
• Applications close on 30 April.
• The application fee is payable to UKZN R200.

Please remember to upload the following documents (where applicable):

1. Certified copy of your ID/passport.
2. Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate or O/A Levels or relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
3. Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA), that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities if you are an international applicant. For more information, refer to the undergraduate prospectus
4. Certified copies of your degree certificate(s), academic record, and certificate of conduct, if you attended other universities.
5. Proof of English proficiency for international applicants from non-English speaking countries.
6. South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluations if the previous qualification(s) was/were obtained at foreign universities (outside South Africa).
7. A research proposal/proposed title of the dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a Masters’s Degree or Ph.D.
8. A valid study visa to study in SA if you are an international applicant.
9. Before applying online please make sure that you have read the guidelines above.
10. Please ensure that you have the HESA/SAQA documents to be uploaded in order to complete your application.
11. Please ensure to use the reference APPN (followed by your student number) when making application fee payments.
12. Please allow the system 24 hrs to 48 hrs to clear your payment.
